Since my gear can handle rain without a problem, I like to go out and shoot in it when I can. Backlighting is always fun to do in this sort of weather as it really pops in the rain or any splashed up drops of water, however alien bee’s and other such strobes have the tendency to blow up when wet so I always pack speed lights instead. The main challenge that comes with shooting like this though is flare. I try to use the subjects as flags and silhouette them up against the light, however this isn’t always easy when they’re moving through the frame fairly quickly. You’ve got that 1/125th of a second to line them up just right. If there’s enough water between you and the lens though, it can act as a flag on it’s own.

Amazing – this would be such a fun way to shoot!
You pulled these off really, really well.
These are nuts dude.
Especially loving the silhouette on the last one
thanks, i love the composite work on your blog. the model jumping off the building is seemless, it had me fooled until i read the description.
thank you, it is pretty fun shooting stuff like this in the rain.
WOW! Awesome stuff man, how’d you weather proof your strobes?
wow those pictures so amazing and inspiring.
the last one is awesomeee
my speed lights can take a little bit of water without me having to worry so i leave those alone unless it’s really coming down. in that case i put them in ziploc bags.
thanks! i appreciate it.
thank you, i think that one’s my favorite too.
I Bet you didnt know that the light coming from that car, resembles something of a cop car flashing his beam at an unsuspected rider. love it mattt, love you. in a non creepy but gay way.
